When Is the Best Time to See the Great Migration?

AMAmani Mwangale20 May 20266 min read

A short answer (it depends on which scene you want) and a long answer (here's how to choose between calving, crossings, and quiet shoulder months).

There is no single 'best' month — there are three peak windows, each with a very different atmosphere. Pick the one that matches the photographs you have in your head.

February — calving season

Tens of thousands of newborn wildebeest, predators at maximum activity, and short-grass plains that photograph beautifully at golden hour.

July to early October — the river crossings

The classic, high-drama window. Book six to nine months ahead for northern Serengeti camps.

November and late May — the quiet windows

Lower rates, fewer vehicles, and green-season light. You give up the predictability of high season but gain the Serengeti at its loveliest.
